ILO DIR GEN VISITS QC MIGRANTS RESOURCE CENTER

International Labour Organization (ILO) Director General Gilbert Houngbo has visited the Quezon City government’s Migrant Resource Center (QC MRC) on Tuesday, June 27, 2023, coinciding with the 75th Anniversary of the country’s membership to the United Nations (UN) agency mandated to safeguard social and economic justice by setting international labor standards.

The partnership between the Quezon City government and the ILO was strengthened with the signing of partnership last year through BRIDGE and Safe and Fair Programmes, funded by the Multi-Partner Trust Fund and the European Union.

The Quezon City Migrants Resource Center (QC MRC) was established through the enactment of City Ordinance SP-2500 with the aim to serve more than 180,000 migrant workers who reside in the city.

The Quezon City Migrants Resource Center is the first-ever such service facility created to assist migrant workers in the National Capital Region (NCR).

The city government, through the Public Employment Service Office-Migration Services Division (PESO-MSD), manages Migrants Resource Center (MRC) to facilitate programs and services for Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) and their families.

Through this center, several migration programs and services of the QC government, Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), and other partner institutions are in one roof.

The concerns of OFWs and their families are being attended to by the PESO Migrant Services Division through various services such as OFW Helpdesk, Online Kumustahan, and OFC Organizing. The MRC office can accommodate a maximum of five (5) clients per day in facilitating assessment and referral services, giving psycho-social first aid, organizing activities, and disseminating information.

The MRC also conducts seminars and training to equip the OFWs and their families with essential skills and knowledge on entrepreneurship, as well as local and overseas employment to ensure their career development path.

In addition to these services, MRC further helps mitigate the social costs of migration, by providing assistance and protection to children left behind by their overseas working parents. It has recently launched the SMARt Child project called “E-Habilin”.

MRC has also organized 48 OFW Chapters as part of empowering communities and strengthening advocacy campaigns on local migration governance.

Concepcion Sardana, and ILO Regional Office for Asia and Pacific Senior Communication Officer Steve Needham, had a courtesy call to Mayor Joy Belmonte. They were welcomed by Mayor Belmonte, together with PESO manager Rogelio Reyes and other PESO officials: Ms. Djohanna Delia G. Ravelo (PESO-MSD) and Mr. Joe Alex C. Macabulos (PESO-PED).

“We are privileged to have you here on your first official visit to the Philippines. Your extensive experience and track record in advocating for the rights of workers inspire us all,” said Mayor Joy Belmonte.

“Together, we push forward with our unwavering commitment to advance social justice and decent working conditions for our overseas workers and care for the well-being of their children and their families,” the mayor said.
